LIS student or new graduate?

Are you an LIS student or new graduate living in the NT or near the NT border? If so, the ALIA NT Students and New Graduates Group (NT SNGG) would love to hear from you!

The ALIA NT SNGG aims to foster a friendly and supportive online community for anyone who is either studying or working/looking for work as a new graduate in the Library and Information sector in the Northern Territory. While we are primarily an online group, we also aim to complement and support the local activities of the other NT-based ALIA groups - ALIA Red Centre and ALIA Top End.

Why join ALIA Top End Committee?

With the ALIA Top End AGM close approaching (13 November) this is a good time to remind people about the not only to join ALIA but consider joining the ALIA Top End Committee.

Below Claire Nield from the Police Fire and Emergency Services Library explains the reasons why she joined ALIA:

Why did I join ALIA?

I work in a profession that is its own worst enemy at times and for many years I railed against that as loudly and probably as obnoxiously as I could.  But then I made a Decision (yes with a capital D). The following quote from Maya Angelou (poet, author and civil rights activist) describes the ‘D’ moment perfectly:

‘If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude. Don't complain.’

I have been an ALIA member for a while; my input ‘tokenistic’ at the most but in response to my  light bulb moment I joined the ALIA committee.

We as a profession need to be professional – ALIA’s PD scheme is a really key initiative to ensure our skills and knowledges are state of the art and are recognised but we as professionals need to model best practice in our practice, share our stories, our ways of doing, our successes and failures so we can stop shooting ourselves in the foot and increasingly move towards significantly and meaningfully driving the quality of our future.

ALIA as a professional association has worked very hard on its relevance and its role as professional support but I feel over the last few years it has taken it to a new level and is driving recognition and change and I’m really glad to be part of that process. By the way if that means sometimes I have to sit through committee meetings when I’d prefer to be sitting with a glass of wine on my balcony, well I have to; because I want to contribute meaningfully to the quality of my future, our future.

NT NAC/Annual Member Forum 7 October 5pm

Hi everyone

I am really pleased to announce that Damian Lodge, ALIA President, will be in Darwin, 7 October to chair the annual NT NAC (National Advisory Congress) / Annual Member Forum meeting.

ALIA's annual NAC meetings are a great opportunity for members to have a say about their professional association and the important issues affecting our industry.

The theme for this year’s forum is ‘Together we are Stronger’. Join Damien Lodge and your NT colleagues to discuss ALIA's Future of the Profession project. Please consult the ALIA Futures reports located at https://www.alia.org.au/futureoftheprofession before the meeting.

Thanks for all those who attended the PD session last night- very interesting.

Now ALIA Top End would love to offer you the chance to run a professional development session in 2015. Running a PD session is an excellent way to present to a kind and understanding audience while building your presentation skills and sharing your knowledge with your colleagues.  PD sessions can cover a wide range of topics in the library and information field, think of an idea and anything is possible.

Linked data is all about using the web to connect data. Learn about using linked open data for cultural institutions and how it fits into the semantic web.  This session will be delivered by Anthony Hornby, Associate Director Resources & Technology at Charles Darwin University.
